Michael P. Hamnett has been named Executive Director/Chief Operating Officer of the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaiʻi (RCUH), effective June 1, 2004.

Hamnett is currently Director of the Social Science Research Institute (SSRI) at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. SSRI facilitates and supports interdisciplinary, applied research that addresses critical, social, environmental, and economic problems primarily in Hawaiʻi and the Asia Pacific region. Hamnett has spent the past 25 years as a researcher and a research manager at the University of Hawaiʻi, the Pacific Basin Development Council, and the East-West Center, and has extensive experience in strategic planning, working with private and public sectors, and understanding the research enterprise and its unique challenges and opportunities.

RCUH Board Chairman Brian Tamamoto said, "We look forward to Mike‘s leadership. He brings the right combination of research and leadership skills, plus his familiarity with the inner workings of the University of Hawaiʻi and state and federal governments will give him a running start as we continue to build upon RCUH‘s mission of supporting the research and training activities of the state."

RCUH was established by the Legislature in 1965. The fundamental mission of RCUH is to support the research and training programs of the University of Hawaiʻi and to enhance research, development, and training programs generally in Hawaiʻi. It is exempt from certain state statutes and maintains its own financial and human resources systems, independent of the state system. During the past year, RCUH‘s volume of business was $212 million.

The Executive Director/Chief Operating Officer position was previously held by Harold Masumoto, who retired last year.
