In 2015, a record number of tropical cyclones occurred in the Pacific. In anticipation of the start of hurricane season on June 1 and other natural hazards, the UH Sea Grant College Program (Hawai‘i Sea Grant), City and County of Honolulu Department of Emergency Management, State of Hawai‘i Emergency Management Agency, NOAA National Weather Service and State Farm are teaming up to offer a free public workshop to assist communities plan and prepare for natural hazards.

The April 28 workshop will cover a variety of topics including severe weather warnings, emergency supplies, evacuation planning for a tsunami and hurricane, homeowner guidance and retrofit measures, and insurance. It is free and open to the public.

“Last year, with Hurricanes Kilo, Ignacio and Jimena in the vicinity, reporters asked what homeowners can do to prepare. The options were limited because of the shortness of time. On Thursday, many reasonable options homeowners can take to retrofit their houses will be presented in time before hurricane season. We will also provide free copies of the Homeowner’s Handbook to Prepare for Natural Hazards. Even for the oldest of houses, many significant measures to strengthen the structure are possible,” noted handbook co-author Dennis Hwang of Hawai‘i Sea Grant.
