Hoʻokani Kulanui highlights UH West OĎahuís spring music lineup

KAPOLEI --- Bring an instrument, learn a mele, and kanikapila with premier Hawaiian music artists at UH West Oʻahu Hoʻokani Kulanui events this spring. Hoʻokani Kulanui – a free event – is hosted by Nā Hokū Hanohano Award Winner and UH West Oʻahu Hawaiian Ensemble Instructor Kamuela Kimokeo. All students, faculty, staff, and the general public are invited to bring an instrument and join in during these epic jam sessions with Hawaiʻi’s most talented musicians.

Hoʻokani Kulanui is sponsored by the UH West Oʻahu PIKO Project, which is funded by a U.S. Department of Education Title III grant, and the UH West Oʻahu Humanities Division and music program. Additionally this spring, the University Chorus, directed by Karol Nowicki, will be performing at E Hīmeni Kākou, a collegiate choral festival, at Central Union Church on Saturday, March 18, at 7 p.m., and at the Kapolei Choral Festival, featuring Hawaiian choral music, at Kapolei High School on Friday, April 7, at 7 p.m.

The University Band performs its Spring Concert in the UH West Oʻahu Multipurpose Room (room C208) on Wednesday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m. The University Band will perform a Community Concert on Saturday, April 29, at Pearlridge Center at 1:30 p.m. Admission is free for both events.

Hear new original songs by UH West Oʻahu students at the UH West Oʻahu Songwriting Hōʻike directed by Jon Magnussen on Saturday, April 29, at 5 p.m. as well as new music from The Lullaby Project featuring the Leeward Community College Hawaiian Ensemble at 7:30 p.m. in UH West Oʻahuʻs Multipurpose Room (room C208). Admission is free.

Finally, on Monday, May 1 at 7:00pm the Hawaiian Ensemble and Beginning ʻUkulele and Slack Key Guitar classes of Kamuela Kimokeo present their annual year-end contribution to the “Hanauna Mele” concert in collaboration with students from Windward Community College at WCC’s Palikū Theater.
