Hawai‘i CC welcomes new Dean of Liberal Arts and Public Services and new Director of Nursing

Hawai‘i Community College hosted a kīpaepae welcoming ceremony on Thursday, June 1 to welcome Melanie Wilson, the new Dean of Liberal Arts and Public Services, and Laura Hill, the new Director of Nursing and Allied Health.

Hill and Wilson both bring many years of experience to their new positions at Hawai‘i CC.

Wilson was the Director of Assessment and Institutional Research at Leech Lake Tribal College in Minnesota. She previously served as the Interim Dean of Student Services, the Dean of Instruction, and the Distance Education Coordinator/Technology Instructor. Wilson’s administrative work experience includes the leadership and direction for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM), Arts, Humanities and Professional Studies programs at Leech Lake Tribal College. Under her supervision and guidance, Leech Lake Tribal College increased its distance education programming and online course offerings.

Wilson is well versed in culturally relevant lesson planning and indigenous learning theory. She received her Master of Science Degree in Education from Bemidji State University in Minnesota and her Doctorate of Education from Nova Southeastern University in Florida.

Hill received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing in 1992 and her Master of Science in Nursing in 2007 from California State University, Bakersfield. She recently completed her Doctorate in Educational Leadership at California State University, Fresno. She has a current nursing license to practice in Hawai‘i.

Hill has 26 years of nursing experience in a variety of hospital settings, with expertise in the area of maternal childcare. She has more than seven years of formal teaching experience at Bakersfield College and also served for two years as the Nursing Program Director at Santa Barbara City College.
