The Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival has awarded Don Ranney, Leeward Theatre’s technical director, the 2019 Excellence in Theatre Education Award from Region 8.

The honor recognizes faculty and staff at universities and colleges throughout the region who go “beyond the call of duty” in devoting their time, efforts, talent and energy on behalf of the students and in support of faculty and staff of their institution.

Ranney was recognized for his unique commitment to Leeward Community College’s students, his colleagues, Leeward Theatre and his profession.

The award honors his vision, knowledge, high intention and sincere effort in fostering, supporting and developing a greater respect and appreciation for theatre, theatre education and all who participate in it.

Kay Ono, interim dean of academic services states, “We are all so thrilled that Don’s talent, dedication and commitment to his students and the work at the theatre, has been recognized. He has given so much of himself to the Theatre for more than four decades. Don is truly deserving of the honor.”

Ranney has served as the technical director at Leeward CC‘s theatre since 1977. He has won numerous Poʻokela awards for lighting and set design and has worked closely with a large number of community performing arts companies.

Region 8 of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival is comprised of Arizona, Central and Southern California, Hawaiʻi, Southern Nevada, Utah and Guam. The 2019 festival was held in February at the Los Angeles Theatre Center.
