UH Receives Overwhelming Response to Cancer Research Center RFQ

The University of Hawaiʻi has received 14 responses to the Request for Qualifications (RFQ) issued for the development of a new Cancer Research Center of Hawaiʻi facility on the Kakaʻako waterfront. The facility, which could be about 360,000 square feet in size, is proposed to be developed on a vacant 5.5 acre site owned by the Hawaiʻi Community Development Authority, the state agency responsible for the redevelopment of Kakaʻako.

"The Request for Qualifications process approved by the Board of Regents in November 2004 has gotten off to a great start," said UH Interim President David McClain. "We are impressed with the substantial development expertise and financial strength of the companies who have responded for the Cancer Research Center of Hawaiʻi project."

Through the RFQ process, the university intends to identify and select a developer to enter into a comprehensive real estate agreement, including planning, design, finance, construction and management, for the project. The Statement of Qualifications submitted by the development teams will be evaluated and a short list of three to five of the most qualified teams will be invited to submit proposals to develop the project. The proposals will be evaluated and one developer will be recommended to the university‘s Board of Regents for approval.

"It is exciting to learn that so many qualified firms are interested in this project," said Dr. Carl-Wilhelm Vogel, Director of the Cancer Research Center of Hawaiʻi. "The development teams who have submitted their Statements of Qualifications for this project have designed and developed major health facilities throughout the country including prominent cancer research centers."

The developers that have submitted Statements of Qualifications to the University of Hawaiʻi include:

· Cisterra Partners, LLC of San Diego, California

· Dasco Companies of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida

· The Hawaiʻi office of Forest City Enterprises

· Frauenshuh Companies of Bloomington, Minnesota

· Garfield Traub Development of Dallas, Texas/The Styles Company

· Hammes Company of Orange, California

· HealthSettings Network, Inc. of Rochester, New York/Pacific Medical Buildings of San Diego, California

· Island Finance and Development LLC of Honolulu, Hawaiʻi

· Hines of San Francisco, California

· KUD International LLC of Los Angeles, California

· Simeon Commercial Properties of San Francisco, California

· Townsend Capital, LLC of Towson, Maryland

The developers have formed teams with well established architectural, construction, financial and other firms from Hawaiʻi and the mainland.

The short list of finalists is expected to be announced on January 21, 2005.
