The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa College of Education will recognize its 2004 student scholarship recipients and scholarship donors at a special reception on Friday, Jan. 21. In 2004, 69 students in the College of Education received scholarships totaling $138,000.

"The College of Education, its students, and Hawaiʻi‘s keiki are grateful for those who so generously give to the college," said College of Education Dean Randy Hitz. "Like the rest of the nation, Hawaiʻi is experiencing a shortage of teachers and these scholarships enable us to recruit the best students in teacher education and to address the teacher shortage problem."

More than 160 applications were processed by the College of Education‘s scholarship committee, led by coordinator Virgie Chattergy, assistant dean of the Office of Student Academic Services, and members Irv King, Niki Libarios, Patsy Suyat and Julie Kaomea.

To apply, students are asked to submit a general application form; a personal statement that details information about their career plans, their goals as a professional in the field of education, their financial situation, and how they meet the requirements of each scholarship they are applying for; and two letters of recommendation, one from a COE faculty member and one from someone familiar with their academic, teaching, or professional experience.

Scholarship information and applications for the 2005-2006 academic year will be available in February on the College of Education‘s website, www.hawaii.edu/coe/.
