Alice Augusta Ball Day was the first woman to be awarded a master’s degree and the first woman to teach chemistry at what was then called the College of Hawaii. An African-American pioneer, her work in 1915 extracting oil from the chaulmoogra tree to treat Hansen’s disease was forgotten until recently. A chaulmoogra tree near Bachman Hall was dedicated to her in 2000.
