With the current six-year tuition schedule expiring in 2012, the University of Hawaii Board of Regents will consider a new tuition schedule for differentiated increases that includes modest increases for resident undergraduates in the first year, aligns graduate and nonresident rates according to market and/or cost and proposes substantial increases in financial assistance.

Context for setting tuition
The board considers multiple factors while deliberating new rates, including financial requirements to support high-quality public higher education throughout the state; unprecedented UH enrollment growth over the past several years; diminishing state financial support for public higher education in difficult financial times; appropriate sharing of the actual cost of education by students and the public; the importance of financial aid in ensuring access for all, including traditionally under-represented students; and tuition rates charged by similar public institutions in other states.
University of Hawaii funding sources, fiscal year 2008 to 2011
A multi-year tuition schedule allows Hawaii families to plan for enrollment costs when students enter the university. It also allows the university to plan in order to provide benefits to students, such as:
- Increased financial assistance to students and their families with financial need
- Improved and modernized learning environments
- More classes to support increased enrollment
- Increased academic and student support services
- Investments in health, safety and security
