Manoa’s Hanauma Bay Education Program established a partnership with the Hawai'i Center for Deaf and Blind to promote stewardship and build teaching capacity. The Hanauma Bay Education Program is part of the Hawai‘i Sea Grant College Program.
In November, middle school students from HCDB had the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with Sea Grant marine educators at Hanauma Bay and, through interactive activities and presentations located throughout the nature preserve, learned about the history, geology, corals, marine life and conservation efforts.
The students then worked with additional material in the classroom before returning to Hanauma bay to teach early elementary school students from HCDB. In addition to acquiring knowledge, these middle school student teachers gain confidence, maturity and empowerment through this process, while the elementary students are exposed to new experiences and information.
