Manoa’s Curriculum Research and Development Group published Weather and Ratios.
Weather and Ratios is a mathematics unit that focuses on rational numbers and comparisons of rational numbers with a heavy emphasis on ratios and percents. The unit is suitable for use with students in grades 6–8 and is aligned with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Principles and Standards for School Mathematics.
The Weather and Ratios unit is based on specific Internet sites that provide current and historical weather data. The data available at these sites is updated continuously, providing students with an opportunity to collect data, answer mathematical questions, and communicate to others what they have learned.
This unit is the second in a series designed for middle school students. It incorporates significant mathematics in a dynamic context. Like the Traffic units, this unit is suitable for teachers who are looking for materials that enable them to integrate concepts from more than one discipline.
Weather and Ratios is available from the Curriculum Research and Development Group website.
