Manoa Professor Chennat Gopalakrishnan was elected a Fellow of the International Water Resources Association.
The IWRA honored Gopalakrishnan for his distinguished scholarly contributions, his wide-ranging professional activities and his deep-seated commitment to issues of sustainable water resource management in a global context, all of which make him a truly deserving candidate to be a Fellow Member of IWRA.
Gopalakrishnan has played a leadership role in shaping water policy for agriculture in the western United States. The major policy contributions emanating from his work are embodied in several highly regarded reports and journal articles.
Gopalakrishnan has an exemplary record of contributions in the field of water economics and policy. Through 6 books, more than 60 refereed publications, more than 65 conference papers, miscellaneous research reports, and various advisory roles, he has contributed significantly to advancing the discourse on multiple aspects of water resources development and management nationally and internationally on a sustained basis.
Among his scholarly contributions in the water economics and policy field, two books deserve special mention. Water Institutions: Policy, Performance and Prospects is the first major attempt to address, comprehensively, the many issues associated with institutional innovation in water resource management. Water and Disasters is an excellent review and assessment of the causes, consequences and post-recovery policies for water disasters.
