The Distinguished Alumni Awards recognize outstanding alumni who have used their UH education to excel professionally and provide inspirational leadership and service to the community. This year’s awardees will be honored with a dinner May 7, 5:30 p.m. at the Sheraton Waikiki.
The honorees
Chiyome Fukino (MD ’79) has served as the director of the Hawai‘i State Department of Health since 2002. Her accomplishments during her tenure include making Hawai‘i the first state to offer statewide, school-based flu vaccinations and holding the first Statewide Suicide Prevention Conference.
James (MA ’69) and Lois (MA ’69) Horton are visiting professors at Manoa. One of their many books Slavery and the Making of America was the basis for the series on PBS. They served as advisers on the History Channel’s series 10 Days that Unexpectedly Shaped America.
Dee Jay Mailer (BS ’75, MBA ‘85) has served as chief executive officer at Kamehameha Schools since 2004. She was formerly the chief operating officer of the United Nations-supported Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and chief executive officer for Kaiser Permanente.
Sabrina McKenna (BA ’78, JD ‘82) has a distinguished career as a lawyer and jurist. She is a former assistant professor at Manoa and a member of the Rainbow Wahine Basketball team.
This year’s UH Founders Alumni Association Lifetime Achievement Award honors Daniel B. T. Lau (BA ’41). He was drafted into the U.S. Army and served in World War II. Lau was awarded the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster in 1944 for injuries sustained in the Battle of the Bulge. In 1952, he co-founded Finance Factors where he currently serves at chairman. Through Lau’s generosity, many students have benefited from scholarships he established as well as his service as on the UH Alumni Association board of directors.
