M.R.C. Greenwood met with Honolulu reporters via videoconference
M.R.C. Greenwood will become the 14th president of the UH System, beginning no later than Aug. 24. Greenwood is director of the Foods for Health Initiative and distinguished professor at the University of California, Davis, and adjunct professor at UC Berkeley. She served as provost and senior vice president for academic affairs for the 10-campus UC system.
By a unanimous vote of the 12 members present, the Board of Regents on June 10 approved a three-year contract with an annual salary of $475,008, subject to any reduction instituted as part of university efforts to deal with state budget restrictions.
The board action followed public comment in which a member of the Manoa Faculty Senate Executive Committee voiced confidence in the selection process and Greenwood and other individuals asked the board to review alternate candidates.
Noting that he had never seen a selection committee work harder, BOR Chair Allan Landon says, “We learned quickly that we would not find a designer candidate” who would please everyone. “Our objective was to add to the executive talent to continue the great progress the university has been making in the last few years. We think Dr. Greenwood is ideally prepared to do that.”
President David McClain, whose appointment ends July 31, calls Greenwood “a brilliant, internationally recognized scholar and a proven and transformational academic leader” whose experience guide the university through current economic challenges and future growth.
In a video news conference with Honolulu media, Greenwood said she was attracted to the position by the quality of UH programs, innovation taking place on UH campuses and the unique opportunity to work in a system integrating community colleges, baccalaureate institutions and a research university. “I hope to be able to make a contribution,” she said. “This is a great day in my life and, I hope, one that we all will remember as positive in the future.”
“I bring to you my pledge to work as hard as I can to lead the university and to earn the trust and confidence of the people of Hawaiʻi. You have my personal commitment to work with the Board of Regents with a singularity of purpose and to the success of our common endeavor.”
