Hilo Professor Phillipe Binder, Associate Professor Keith Edwards, IT Specialist Wesley Tanoue and Clerk Typist Erlinda Walker were honored for their contributions to Hilo during the annual End of the Year Celebration and Recognition Ceremony.
Binder was honored with the Award for Excellence in Scholarly/Creative Activities. His work on chaos, a unique field in physics, produced two papers on the relevance of chaos in the field of astronomy during the past academic year. He also authored three short papers while on sabbatical. “Frustration in Complexity,” “Reflections on a Wall of Light” and “Philosophy on Science.”
Edwards received the Koichi and Taniyo Taniguchi Award for Excellence and Innovation. He obtained a grant that brought over $80,000 worth of computer equipment and software to the Computer Science Department. The equipment was used in Edwards’ software engineering class where students developed applications for the Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes.
Tanoue was honored with the Professional Staff Award for providing personal support and troubleshooting for office computers and a wide range of software applications. He played a key role in the installation of more than 20 Internet security cameras all over campus. Tanoue also services the hardwired hot spots and battery powered remote on the Student Life Center’s electronic lock system.
Walker received the Outstanding University Support Staff Award for her work in the financial aid office. Over the past six years, her workload has dramatically increased as the amount of student loans processed each year soared from $3 million to $16 million. She has also been credited with saving students more than $306,000 in loan fees by expediting the processing of loans.
