Kudos for Kapiʻolani’s Marcia A. Armstrong and Manoa’s Mortar Board chapter.
ASCLS President Elect
Marcia A. Armstrong, emeritus professor at Kapiʻolani, was elected president-elect of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science at their Annual Meeting on July 25, 2009. When she assumes the office of president in July 2010, she will be the first person from Hawai’i to hold this position. ASCLS is the preeminent organization for over 10,000 clinical laboratory science practitioners.
During the period that Armstrong was director of Kapiʻolani’s Medical Laboratory Technician program, she was responsible for the program gaining initial accreditation in 1983 and maintaining the full accreditation status thereafter. The MLT program was named the Hawaiʻi state post secondary vocational program of the year in 2000.
Mortar Board Honor
UH Mānoa’s Hui Poʻokela chapter was honored for excellence at the 2009 Mortar Board National Conference, held July 24-26, 2009, in Chicago. Hui Poʻokela was one of 32 chapters to take home the Golden Torch Award, presented to outstanding Mortar Board chapters that go beyond the minimum standards throughout the academic year. Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service.
Only a select number of Golden Torch Award nominees are chosen to receive the award based on their devotion to Mortar Board’s three key ideals of scholarship, leadership and service.
