Maxwell K. K. Tom was honored as the 2010 recipient of the President’s Award for Excellence in Building and Grounds Maintenance. This award honors a UH employee who exhibits dedication and sustained superior performance in a maintenance, landscaping, custodial, shop or trucking position.
Since joining Hawaiʻi in 2008, Tom has demonstrated positive leadership as the senior groundskeeper. His high capacity for work coupled with his can-do attitude is infectious and is something for all to emulate. Tom’s problem solving abilities are excellent and his perseverance and commitment to do things right the first time is second to none.
He has conservatively saved the college more than $200,000 by taking on challenges such as cleaning out the ditch drains, implementing a rain gutter cleaning program and starting a campus compost pile.
Tom is praised by faculty, staff, students and visitors for his constant efforts to beautify and improve the campus grounds.
Tom will be recognized for his achievements along with other UH award recipients at the annual Convocation ceremony in the fall at the UH Mānoa campus.
