West Oʻahu develops an innovative new program designed to meet the national growing need for skilled insurance professionals with support from local insurance companies. Island Insurance and Atlas Insurance teamed up to make a $15,000 gift to support West Oʻahu’s Certificate in Insurance and Risk Management Program.

The insurance and risk management certificate provides training in risk management, personal and commercial insurance and prepares students for the licensure examination.

“We are very excited about our growing partnership with Hawaiʻi’s insurance and risk management industry,” says West Oʻahu Chancellor Gene Awakuni. “Despite placement rates close to 100 percent, the annual yield of graduates from the nation’s risk management and insurance programs meets only 10 to 15 percent of industry needs. UH West Oʻahu is committed to providing an education that will help our students find meaningful work within high-demand industries.”

“We are proud to support the development of this groundbreaking educational program,” says Tyler Tokioka, president of the Island Insurance and Atlas Insurance Foundations. “It is important not only to our industry but the community as well that we develop the solid foundation needed to cultivate a skilled and talented workforce.”
