UH Campuses Deemed Military Friendly Schools

West Oʻahu, Leeward, Honolulu and Kapiʻolani were recently named among a select group of higher education institutions nationwide for inclusion in the G.I. Jobs Military Friendly Schools 2012 List. G.I. Jobs is the premier magazine for military personnel transitioning into civilian life.
The list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students. Schools on the list range from state universities and private colleges to community colleges and trade schools. Read more
6th Annual AUW Softball Tournament

In support of the 2011 Aloha United Way Oʻahu Campaign, the University of Hawaiʻi will hold the 6th Annual AUW Softball Tournament on Fri., Sept. 30, 5 p.m. at Les Murakami Stadium on the Mānoa campus.
Teams from each Oʻahu campus, the UH System administration and Aloha United Way will compete in a double elimination tournament.
Come and support all the teams. There will be door prizes and Sodexho food service will be available.

Researchers Awarded Apple Snail Grant

The National Science Foundation’s International Research Experiences for Students program has awarded a $149,952 grant to a team of researchers including Assistant Researcher Kenneth Hayes and Researcher Robert Cowie of Mānoa’s Center for Conservation Research and Training.
Under the direction of Hayes and Romi Burks of Southwestern University, this IRES award will support 1 graduate and 15 undergraduate students to conduct collaborative research in Brazil and Uruguay for three years. Read more
Vietnam MBA Program and Director Recognized

Mānoa’s Shidler College of Business received a $30,000 gift from the Imaging and Printing Group at Hewlett Packard Vietnam for the Vietnam Executive MBA program. Tung Bui, the program’s faculty director, received an honorable merit award from the Vietnam Ministry of Education and Training. Read more

Windward’s 11th annual Hoʻolauleʻa on Sat., Oct. 1 from 9 a.m. features top island entertainment, award-winning hula documentaries, unique crafts, food, keiki activities, a college-sponsored silent auction and displays.
Among the featured performers will be Maunalua, Kapena, the Waimānalo Sunset Band and the Kahaluʻu ʻUkulele Band. There will be appearances by several hula hālau, a hula film fest and free showings of Lisette Flanary’s award-winning documentaries—American Aloha: Hula Beyond Hawaiʻi and Nā Kamalei: The Men of Hula—which have been broadcast on PBS. All proceeds fund Windward’s scholarships and programs. Read more

Mānoa Ranked Among Best Colleges

Mānoa is again ranked among the Best National Universities in the 2012 edition of the “Best Colleges” guidebook published today by U.S. News and World Report. Out of 280 higher education institutions, Mānoa ranks 164. The 2012 edition of the Best Colleges guidebook is scheduled to appear on newsstands Sept. 20. Read more
Mānoa Receives $4 million for Disaster Preparedness

The Mānoa Natural Disaster Preparedness and Training Center will receive $4.71 million to develop and continue training programs designed to prepare Hawaiʻi’s first responders for manmade or natural disasters. The news was announced by Senator Daniel K. Inouye, Senator Daniel K. Akaka and Congresswoman Colleen Hanabusa. Read more
