The Native Hawaiian Center of Excellence also has an office at the University of Hawai`i at Hilo.

Keala Lapa'au Program
The Keala Lapa`au Program was established by the John A. Burns School of Medicine Native Hawaiian Center of Excellence (NHCOE) to assist and inspire Native Hawaiian students to pursue a career in medicine. The Keala Lapa `Au Program is designed to provide counseling, opportunities for Native Hawaiian students to career shadow with a certified health professional within their career of interest, instructional sessions involving math and science, and awareness of traditional Hawaiian healing techniques.


The University of Hawai`i (UH) offers a wide variety of programs in the fields of health and medicine.

Financial Aid & Scholarship Information

There are various scholarships available for persons of Native Hawaiian ancestry. Many of these scholarships are offered through the Kamehameha Schools/Bishop Estate Scholarships. The Native Hawaiian Health Professions Scholarship is specifically for students in health related fields. Doctors of Hawai'i
Doctors of Hawaii is a set of seven volumes containing the biographical sketches of more than 600 doctors from the early 1800's up to 1985 who practiced medicine in Hawaii and are now deceased.

Native Hawaiian Scholarship Program
The Native Hawaiian Scholarship Program addresses the Shortage of Primary Health Care Providers to serve Native Hawaiians by providing payment for health professions training in exchange for the scholar serving in a federally designated health professional shortage area in Hawaii on completion of training.

Office of Minority Health Resource Center Database Record
Hui Malama Ola Na'Oiwi (Caring for the Health of the Native Hawaiian) is a community-based, non-profit Native Hawaiian organization created under the Native Hawaiian Health Care Improvement Act of 1988 and reauthorized in 1991 to the year 2001 (Public Law 100-579) to serve the health care needs of Native Hawaiians residing in Hawai'i County.
