In addition he cuts cane for arrow shafts. In the village of Malumbu the man carves an arrow-head with a barb. He hardens it over a fire, dips the end into resin of the bread-fruit tree and pushes it into one of the pieces of cane which he then shortens to the length of an arrow-shaft. The shafting part and the notched end of the shaft are wound round with coconut fibres. The man hardens the end of the shaft with some embers. Finally he tests the completed arrow by a few shots.
