At the outskirts of the village of Laro on the island Ngabelipa (Lomlom) a woman loosens white and black strips of bast from banana bushes. She cleans the bast in front of her dwelling with a mussel shell, then puts the supplies in the roof truss to be stored until further weaving. She goes on with the work she has begun on a horizontal weaving loom with separating rod, on which she produces a man's cloth-bound dancing apron. Again and again one can see the changing formation of compartments, the shuttle passing, and the final thread "hitting". The pattern is made by black banana bast fibres being drawn in with a wooden needle. Decorative pendants and ornamental strips of leaf are worked into it.
