Description: | In the late 1930s, one of the great Maori leaders, Princess Te Puea Herangi, commissioned the building of a fleet of waka taua (war canoes), to commemorate the ancestral waka that brought the Maori people to Aotearoa. Her vision was to bring the Maori people together at the time of the 1940 centennial of the Treaty of Waitangi. On 6 February 1990 at Waitangi, her vision was realized, with one thousand paddlers in 22 canoes on the water. |
