The people of Rongelap had been seriously irradiated by nuclear test bombing on neighbouring Bikini Atoll during 1946-1958. Their pleas for relocation ignored for decades by the United States, the people from Rongelap were eventually resettled on an island segment of Kwajalein Atoll.
