University of Hawaii:
University Centers & Education Centers

This version of the University of Hawaii: University Centers & Education Centers is designed to promote accessibility for people with disabilities in compliance with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. To ensure proper functioning of assistive technology tools such as screen readers, Hawaiian diacriticals were not included and spaces between selected acronyms were added (e.g., U H). We apologize for any inconvenience.

The University and Education Centers offer the following opportunities to Hawaii residents:

Quote: “My first and only visit to the campus was for my commencement ceremony where I could see the students I came to know in the chat rooms of online classes.”

Picture: Sarah Naeole, B A Social Science, and family, U H West Oahu Commencement, 2005.

Quote: “When I made the decision to complete my education it was a very personal one, as I am sure it is with other students. I had to take into account my circumstances as a mother of three with a full time job, as well as my remote location, Molokai. I was in no position to relocate my family and move away from the very community in which I wished to apply my education. Initially, I utilized Molokai’s Education Center and earned my associate degree. With the positive experience I had with the distance education courses there, I moved on to a full time distance education program in Social Sciences through U H West Oahu.

It is my belief that everyone has the right to the best education no matter where they are. With today’s technology and resources, there is even more opportunity. With such resources in place, I was able to complete my educational goals here at home while maintaining my family and work responsibilities. I continue to tell others in the community about my positive experience knowing that the same is available to them.”

Sarah Naeole

Tammie Napoleon received her nursing degrees through the University of Hawaii System while remaining on Kauai. She received an Associate in Science in Nursing from Kauai Community College, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, and is currently enrolled in the MS in Nursing (MSN) program at U H Manoa. The distance delivery of her BSN and MSN degrees allowed her to pursue both her career and education while remaining close to family and friends. Currently, Tammie is a part-time nursing instructor at Kauai Community College.

Quote: “Kauai Community College has provided me with many opportunities and resources to help me achieve my educational and career goals.”

What are University and Education Centers?

Through the University and Education Centers, U H extends our reach beyond the physical location of each of our 10 campuses. The Centers work with their community and the U H campuses to bring educational programs to meet community’s needs.

University Centers

The Board of Regents created University Centers in 1996 to establish a U H presence in communities that would otherwise lack access to baccalaureate or higher degrees and certificates within the U H System. University Centers are located on Kauai, Maui, and West Hawaii and are part of the community college on their respective islands.

Qualified students may enroll in courses or credential programs offered through the University Center. University Centers do not award degrees or credentials but serve as “brokers” with U H campuses that offer baccalaureate or higher degrees. Residents of these neighbor islands may remain on their home island and earn bachelor’s and graduate degrees or certificates from U H Manoa, U H Hilo, or U H West Oahu.

Education Centers

Education Centers have a 30-year history of providing outreach to Hawaii’s citizens, and most are affiliated with one of the seven U H Community Colleges. The North Hawaii Education and Research Center is part of U H Hilo. These centers provide access to postsecondary education and training for the communities in which they are located. The names of the Education Centers are reflective of the communities they serve (Waianae, Hana, Lanai, Molokai, West Maui, North Hawaii). Education Centers bring credit and noncredit courses to their communities.

All centers provide academic support services such as library services, exam proctoring, technical support, and tutoring and many are receive sites for interactive TV and videoconference courses. Some have computer labs available for student use.

How are Courses Delivered?

University and Education Centers help coordinate distance-delivered courses from campuses within the U H system and provide students with more course options. Some courses are taught in the traditional face-to-face method with students and faculty meeting in classrooms. Other courses are also offered via cable television, videoconference, the internet, and interactive television (ITV). Many are hybrid courses combining two or more methods of delivery (e.g., ITV and internet).

What’s Offered?

More than 40 degrees and credentials, in whole or in part, are offered to Hawaii residents via distance delivery. University Centers may offer different degrees and credentials depending on a community’s higher education priorities and the Center’s ability to receive and support courses and services. The degree programs focus on state workforce and professional development needs and are built upon the solid foundation of two years of community college liberal arts courses. The Education Centers assist with selected associate degrees or certificates.
