Madame Shen Xiaomei

Conferred Feb. 10, 2006, UH Manoa

In 1979 Madame Shen Xiaomei took a bold, even daring step by agreeing to train University of Hawai‘i PhD candidate Elizabeth Wichmann-Walczak in the art of Jingju, China's national traditional theatre. Since then, Madame Shen and Professor Wichmann-Walczak have collaborated on six Jingju performances in English at the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa.

Shen spends a year in residence, training UH students in the fine points of the art of authentic Jingju. In doing so, she has built an international reputation for Chinese theatre, introduced western students to a new form of performance and enhanded the international stature of UH's Asian Theatre Program.
