Regents name M.R.C Greenwood next UH president

During a special meeting June 10, the Board of Regents selected M.R.C. Greenwood to become the next UH president, effective no later than Aug. 24, 2009.

“Our objective in adding to the talent at the University of Hawai‘i is to continue the great progress made by President David McClain and his current administrative team and to expand on the efforts to strengthen our campuses and programs that benefit all the people of Hawai‘i,” said BOR Chair Allan Landon. “I believe that Dr. Greenwood is ideally prepared to do that.”

Background on the presidential search

David McClain has led the 10-campus UH System since 2004. When he announced his intention to step down at the conclusion of his term of appointment on July 31, 2009, the Board of Regents appointed an advisory committee to assist with the search for the university’s next president.

Advisory committee recommendation

The UH Advisory Presidential Search Committee provided its final report to the Board of Regents on May 29. The report recommended BOR consideration of two finalists and detailed the search process. It also addressed criticism raised during the public interview process and Greenwood’s resignation as provost from the University of California.

Calling the subsequent withdrawal of one finalist a disappointment, advisory committee Chair Donna Tanoue announced that the committee continued to recommend Greenwood to the regents for further consideration. Two advisory committee members echoed her message in guest editorials.
