|Honolulu Community College Executive Summary||
Over the past year the division of Student Services has focused inwards in order to address two major things: outcomes/assessment and revamping internal processes/procedures. The work done in each of these areas go hand in hand, and as the division settles into annual assessment work and planning continued updates to procedures and processes will be inevitable as they are part of “closing the loop”.
Specific highlights from each unit include:
Outreach & Orientation: establishment of student learning outcomes, revamping of orientation process, awarding of GearUp and Perkins funding for AY 13-14, planning for comprehensive college recruitment plan.
Financial Aid: Continued movement toward systemization processes, new processes in scholarship awarding (resulting in increased awards for students), creating of student learning outcomes and assessment plan.
Academic Counseling: revamped student learning outcomes, improved hours to meet student needs, establishment of Advising Week activities, creation of assessment plan, increased use in STAR Academic Planner, establishment of counseling email address in hope to address distance learning students, and improved coordination through team and Counseling Coordinator position.
Mental Health & Wellness: establishment of student learning outcomes, creation of assessment plan, assist in creation of Behavioral Intervention Team practices, and participation/leadership in campus training on working with students in distress.
Career & Student Employment: revamped student learning outcomes, creation of assessment plan, continued use of student employment database and online career assessments, and more internal marketing.
Health Office: creation of student learning outcomes for services provided and student leadership positions, creation of assessment plan, increased participation in events, and assisting in emergency planning efforts.
Student Life & Development: adoption of system-wide student learning outcomes and assessment plan, revamped practices to work better with RISO and RISO advisors, continued work around improving administrative practices and procedures around travel and procurement, and revamping of Student Activities Board practices and fee usage.
Admissions & Records: hiring of key staff (Registrar and Associate Registrar for Admissions), establishment of student learning outcomes, creation of assessment plan, revamping of admissions procedures, review of records procedures, participation in new catalog production process, revamping VA support and services, and action plan for adopting system initiatives such as Reverse Transfer.
In the next academic year, the division of student services will continue to refine and improve each of these areas. Work as outlined by accreditation and action plans will help drive the direction and focus. In addition to this internal focus, the next year will be critical in terms of increased internal marketing so the rest of the college can understand the changes and good work the units within the division are doing to support student success and retention.
