I’m excited to join you as we begin a new academic year at the University of Hawaii.
For many of us, including myself, today marks the beginning of a new chapter in our lives. Our campuses are welcoming a record number of students. Some of you just graduated from high school and are enjoying your first day as a college student. Others are returning to continue their studies started last year. And some are returning to the classroom after many years of absence to learn new skills and to prepare for new jobs and new careers. We also have new and returning faculty. I welcome everyone knowing that we all share a common commitment to and belief in higher education.
I am humbled to have been entrusted with the opportunity to lead the University of Hawaii. I know that I have much to learn about our university and from the people of Hawaii. I will be doing a lot of listening in the coming months. I’m especially looking forward to visiting all 10 of our campuses beginning next week. I would like to meet you, hear your ideas and learn about your perspectives on our university. If we don’t meet in person, I encourage you to email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Our journey ahead will not be without challenges. Our nation, our state and our university continue to face severe economic problems. Nonetheless, I am committed to working together to address these challenges with all of the members of the university community. Together, we will make the most of our limited resources. With your support, I know that we can, and we will, find ways to ensure that we continue to educate students, advance the frontiers of human knowledge and contribute to the strengthening of Hawaii’s economy.
I am committed to building on our university’s traditions of excellence and service. We will work together to lead the way towards a brighter future for all of Hawaii.
Thank you for the many warm welcomes that I’ve already received and for sharing your aloha. It is my hope that you enjoy a productive and successful 2009–2010 academic year.
