Making the Elephant Dance Award
Award Recipient
Doodie Downs
Hawaii
Doodie Downs is a student services specialist at Hawaii Community College.
Downs created the Kamaaina application, which makes the application process less intimidating and more user-friendly for students.
The quarterly Making the Elephant Dance Award was created by President David McClain in 2008 to acknowledge individuals who successfully develop innovative ways to improve the university’s service to students and the community. It is named after the book Who Says Elephants Can’t Dance? Leading a Great Enterprise Through Dramatic Change, by former IBM CEO Lou Gerstner, who pushed the large corporate bureaucracy to be more responsive to customers and the marketplace.
