I am honored to have been invited by Senator Daniel Inouye to serve as a member of the 2011 APEC Hawaii Host Committee.
This committee will be responsible for coordinating community preparedness for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperative Leaders Meeting, which is tentatively scheduled for November 2011 at the Hawaii Convention Center.
It is considered one of the biggest and most important international events to ever be held in Hawaii, and it will provide us with an incredible opportunity to showcase the international standing and expertise of our university on a global stage.
There will be many opportunities for our faculty, students and staff to be engaged in APEC related activities.

President’s Advisory Council on Hawaii Innovation and Technology Advancement
In my address to the Legislature in February, I identified our efforts to contribute positively to the workforce and the economy by enhancing our research programs and technology development and transfer as one of our three main strategic objectives moving forward.
I am pleased to announce the creation and appointment of my President’s Advisory Council on Hawaii Innovation and Technology Advancement, a team of local and national experts who will advise us on this issue.
I am excited by the diversity and caliber of individuals who have agreed to serve on the council. They are among the best and brightest in their fields, and I look forward to the ideas they will present to us later this fall.
