APEC 2010 Yokohama
I just returned from Yokohama, Japan, site of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation 2010 meeting. It was an amazing experience to be there in person. As a member of the APEC 2011 Host Committee, I attended the APEC Business Advisory Council dinner and the National Center for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation’s annual lunch where our own Sen. Daniel Inouye spoke about the importance of APEC and how it promotes stability in the Asia-Pacific region, and he welcomed the APEC economies to Honolulu in 2011.
In preparation for the meeting in 2011, Honolulu will host the APEC Symposium and Informal Senior Officials’ Meeting, Dec. 8–9. The symposium brings together APEC officials with business and community leaders from throughout the Asia-Pacific region to discuss APEC’s progress and key issues likely to be on its agenda the next year.
The informal meeting of senior officials is held the next day to discuss outcomes of the symposium. Meetings will take place at the East-West Center. We are recruiting volunteers to assist with various duties for the symposium and senior officials’ meeting and will be providing training for them prior to the meetings. This will be great practice for our volunteers for the APEC meeting next November.

Maui’s Noble Chef raises $60,000
UH Maui College enjoyed a successful fundraising event for its culinary program, the Maui Culinary Academy, with the Noble Chef. It was a sold-out event with 340 people in attendance and a wait list of even more people hoping to get through the doors.
The event raised $60,000 for scholarships for Maui Culinary Academy students. Student chefs put out a delicious array of culinary dishes. The event is also impressive in the collaboration involved and the support provided by the community and professional chefs.
