APEC 2010 Yokohama
I just returned from Yokohama, Japan, site of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation 2010 meeting. It was an amazing experience to be there in person. As a member of the APEC 2011 Host Committee, I attended the APEC Business Advisory Council dinner and the National Center for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation’s annual lunch where our own Sen. Daniel Inouye spoke about the importance of APEC and how it promotes stability in the Asia-Pacific region, and he welcomed the APEC economies to Honolulu in 2011.
In preparation for the meeting in 2011, Honolulu will host the APEC Symposium and Informal Senior Officials’ Meeting, Dec. 8–9. The symposium brings together APEC officials with business and community leaders from throughout the Asia-Pacific region to discuss APEC’s progress and key issues likely to be on its agenda the next year.
The informal meeting of senior officials is held the next day to discuss outcomes of the symposium. Meetings will take place at the East-West Center. We are recruiting volunteers to assist with various duties for the symposium and senior officials’ meeting and will be providing training for them prior to the meetings. This will be great practice for our volunteers for the APEC meeting next November.

Scholarships awarded to Shidler business students
The Shidler College of Business awarded more than $1 million in scholarships to 550 business students for the 2010–2011 academic year. More than 210 scholarship donors and their student recipients attended the Scholarship Luncheon at the Kahala Hotel and Resort on Nov. 1.
The annual event recognizes donors for their support of students and their continued commitment to education. Scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement, financial need, specific area of concentration, community service and other criteria established by the donor.
