Examining and celebrating higher education

More than 250 business, education, community and government leaders gathered for E Kamakani Hou, our first-ever higher education summit at the Hilton Hawaiian Village on Sept. 10. We’ve received extremely positive feedback. Video presentations and summary texts are available, including the remarks of U.S. Undersecretary of Education Martha Kanter’s keynote address.

Post-summit workgroups will be established with members from the various community sectors to build on the rich conversations that took place at the summit and to form a solid foundation as these partnerships begin to take shape and emerge from the summit in the coming weeks. I will visit all of our 10 campuses in the next several months to share information from the summit and listen to the thoughts, questions and ideas of our faculty, students and staff.

I will be traveling extensively over the next month for a variety of meetings, including a board meeting for the Monterey Bay Aquarium and meets at the National Science Foundation. I will speak at the Science and Technology in Society forum in Kyoto and host a presidents breakfast, and then return to California to receive the UC Davis College of Agricultural and Environmental SciencesAward of Distinction and attend the Institute of Medicine annual meeting in Washington, D.C. and inauguration activities for C. L. Max Nikias at the University of Southern California.
