Windward Community College goes green with new library

An array of solar panels on the roof, motion-activated light fixtures using high-efficiency light bulbs and waterless urinals are just a few of the sustainable design elements planned for Windward Community College’s new library.

Architects Hawai‘i, working with engineers, electricians and others on the design plan for the college’s Library Learning Commons, expects to have plans completed in September 2009. Construction is targeted to begin in February 2010 with completion in July 2011.

The project, which will be a model for green building techniques, aims to produce a healthy and productive working environment while reducing the building’s environmental impact.

Construction will follow Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) guidelines set by the U.S. Green Building Council. For LEED certification, which ranges from certified to platinum, every aspect of the building construction and maintenance is reviewed to reduce energy consumption, water use and waste.

For more on the specific design details planned to meet LEED certification requirements, see the Malamalama article.

Our strategic vision for the University of Hawai‘i’s 10 campuses is grounded in Native Hawaiian values, including a strong sense of community, mutual respect and the need to conserve and care for limited resources.

This weekly update highlights projects and programs systemwide that demonstrate that, at UH, sustainability matters.
