Sustainability Matters
Students investigate sustainable issues
Students in Honolulu Community College’s environmental science and general biology courses were tasked this Fall 2008 semester to investigate environmental and other sustainable issues facing Hawai‘i, and will present their findings at a campus Student Environmental Science Forum on Thurs., Dec. 11.
Twenty-five students participated in the service learning activity, which provided a connection to what they learned in the classroom over the semester to real world situations.
Topics investigated include:
- Alternative energy: a look at four alternative energy possibilities for Hawai‘i—solar, wind, ocean thermal and wave;
- Water conservation: an overview of water availability in Hawai‘i and what is being done to manage and conserve this resource;
- Ocean pollution: sources of ocean pollution in Hawai‘i and their effects on this resource;
- Telecommuting: a description of telecommuting and an analysis of the possible benefits at Honolulu Community College; and
- Biodiversity: a description of the different habitats in Hawai‘i and examples of endangered species in each of them.
Informational posters on these topics will be on display at the forum and students will be on hand to answer questions about their findings. The forum will also feature sustainability-themed prizes and refreshments.
