| On Saturday, October 2, 2004, ‘Ōiwi celebrated our second "I ka Makahiki" (In the Makahiki Season) reading event at Native Books/Nā Mea Hawaii in Honolulu. Honoring the time of the Makahiki and the rich cultural legacy of giving thanks and embracing community, this event is also dedicated to our founding editor, Māhealani Dudoit. Bringing together Native Hawaiian and other Indigeneous Pacific writers, this year's even featured Māori poet Robert Sullivan, and Kānaka Maoli poets Joe Balaz, ‘Imaikalani Kalahele, Leomi Burgknut, David Wallace, Lufi Luteru, Sage Takehiro, Jeanne Kawelolani Kinney, and Ku‘ualoha Ho‘omanawanui. |
This year's event also included a storytelling and silk screening event by Hawai‘i island artist Hiko‘ulā Hanapī, who graciously made one of his original art pieces from his "E Huaka‘i Pele!" series available to the public to screen on a t-shirt and take home.
During the entire month of October, the Aupuni Artwall on the 'Ewa side of the store hosted an art exhibit of works created by the visual artists featured in ‘Ōiwi's volume 3. Original works by these artists, Hiko‘ulā Hanapī, Kamaka Kanekoa. Malia Kāne, April Drexel, and Anthony Kekona were also available for purchase. A piece by ‘Ōiwi Art Editor, Maile Andrade, which was created in memory of our founding editor, Māhealani Dudoit, was also highlighted. Mahalo nui to artists for sharing their work!
Held at Native Books/Nā Mea Hawaii's Ward Warehouse location, this event is also cosponsored by Pacific Writers Connection, the Aupuni Artwall, and the Young of Heart Workshop. Mahalo nui loa to everyone who helped to make this event a success, and to those who attended. We look forward to seeing you next year! |
