School
and College Services, in collaboration with Office of Admissions
and Records, has provided over 12 years of personalized outreach/recruitment
activities for prospective students.
Group
and individual visits to the UHM campus. These visits
provide admission, financial aid, and housing information,
and meetings with academic faculty and staff. "Student
Ambassadors" assist with these visits and provide the
peer view of the college experience. Visits by mainland
prospective students and their families have sharply increased
in the last year or so.
UH Rainbow Night/Rainbow Days/Showcase
Nights. These events for prospective students and their
families are held at local high schools (including neighbor
island) or on the UHM campus, and provide information needed
for making a college choice.
Student Services/Academic Advisor team
visits to high schools.
Professional workshops held annually
for public and private high school counselors from Oahu
and the neighbor islands biennually for community college
counselors and high school principals.
Prospect targeting through ordering
of PSAT/SAT lists from the College Board.
Coordination and collaborative planning
of above activities through the Manoa Recruitment Forum,
a group of concerned recruitment representatives from colleges,
academic departments, and student services programs.
National Student Exchange, a 170-university
consortium, allows students at its member institutions to
spend a semester or academic year at one of the other institutions
at the cost of resident tuition, and enables coursework
to be transferred back as part of their home school degree.
This is an especially important opportunity for Hawaii students
and is an important part of SCS recruitment efforts. UHM
is one of the top sending schools in the program, with 120-140
students going out each year.
The attraction of UHM for incoming mainland
students breaks all records in the consortium, and results
in more students (almost 10%) choosing UHM than all students
exchanging anywhere in the consortium. 403 students chose
UHM in Fall 2000 (almost 3 times the number choosing the
#2 school, Umass Amherst), and 350 for Fall 2001 (some were
denied due to lack of housing). The diversity includes 20-30%
non-Caucasian, including considerable African American and
Hispanic students.
The majority of participants are highly
satisfied with their exchange experience. NSE represents
one of the most effective means of promoting UHM on the
mainland.
