The
Women's Center is a safe space for students to meet and to
gather. Founded in March 1991 through the cooperative efforts
of the Hawaii state legislature's women's caucus, and women
students, staff, and faculty at UHM, the Women's Center works
to assist in the personal and academic development of students.
Each semester, the Center sponsors a variety of personal and
academic development workshops, invites local and nationally
recognized guest speakers and performers to UHM, and supports
and hosts meetings for student organizations. The Women's
Center coordinates the following programs:
The Program Against Violence to Women has established a coordinated campus-community response to address issues of partner violence, sexual assault, and stalking on campus. There is a special focus on specific populations at risk for violence: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender students; students with disabilities; international students; non-traditional students; and students from racial/ethnic minority groups. The program provides prevention education programs and on-campus training. The program is funded by a grant from the Department of Justice, Violence Against Women Act.
