What is the National Student Clearinghouse?
The National Student Clearinghouse (Clearinghouse) is a non-profit entity that serves as a nationwide central repository for information on the enrollment status of post-secondary students. Originally developed to track students on financial aid who transferred to other institutions, the database can be used for general purposes in tracking students who leave or fail to attend the University of Hawaii (UH). We began participating in fall 2001.
SERVICES
The Clearinghouse currently provides two services to our University:
- CORE SERVICES (FREE)
Under this service, the Clearinghouse acts as UHs third party agent and reports status information on student financial aid recipients to the U.S. Department of Educations NSLDS (National Student Loan Data System), guaranty agencies, and lenders and servicers.
As part of our participation agreement, our ten campuses submit student data to the Clearinghouse on a regular basis (four times a semester). Our data populates their database, and they, in turn, provide reporting services to those entities mentioned above on our behalf.
- ENROLLMENTSEARCH (A PAID SERVICE)
EnrollmentSearch is a suite of search engine tools to query the Clearinghouses database of current and historical postsecondary student enrollment records (more than 60 million). Nearly 2,700 institutions, representing ~91% of currently enrolled students in the U.S. participate (as of 12/16/03, Clearinghouse EnrollmentSearch brochure). Currently, the UH System Office of Planning and Policy supports this service by paying an annual fee based on enrollment headcount per campus.
Through this service, institutions may be able to identify or confirm a students enrollment at another participating institution.
- FORMER PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS
Those who were admitted but declined to attend UH
- PREVIOUSLY ENROLLED STUDENTS
Former UH students who transferred or graduated
Matching of previously enrolled UH students is done through the use of directory information (student name, date of birth, date of last attendance at requesters institution).
If there is a match, and if the student has not blocked the release of directory information by the institution that submitted the information to the Clearinghouse, the Clearinghouse will provide the following directory information:
- students name
- whether a transfer record was found (Y/N)
- the students new name, if any
- the name of the school of first transfer
- the OPEID code of the transfer school
- the starting date for transfer term
