Jeff is currently Deputy Head (Research)
in the Division of Environmental Science & Engineering, and Associate
Director in the Tropical Marine Science Institute at the National University
of Singapore (NUS). He graduated from the Department of Environmental Science
at Lancaster University in the United Kingdom with a 1st class honours
degree in Ecology, and this was followed by a Ph.D. sponsored by the UK
Water Research Centre. His doctorate addressed the impact of heavy metals
on the biogeochemical cycling of carbon and nitrogen. He has worked extensively
on the application of microbes and enzymes for the remediation of contaminated
environmental media and, in more recent years, has become focused on the
microbial production of biofuels. His work is funded by the Agency of the
Science, Technology & Research (A*STAR), Singapore. Jeff has worked
as an environmental consultant in the UK, Hong Kong and throughout Asia
and has published widely in the field of environmental science & engineering.
He was a team recipient of the 2005 United Nations Mondialogo Engineering
Award (with special laureate recognition) for his work on sustainable development.
He was also the recipient of the NUS University Teaching Excellence Award
in 2007, and the Outstanding Mentor Award from the Singapore Ministry of
Education in 2005.
