The Asia-Pacific Institute of Tropical Medicine and Infectious Disease (APITMID), John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii at Manoa, will be the principal partner of this laboratory, and will be responsible for managing the facility for the other partners. APITMID is a new program at the University of Hawaii that has as its mission, to develop a global center of excellence in Hawaii that focuses on tropical infectious diseases of the Asia-Pacific Region. The program will combine basic and applied, state of the art research, with a training program that emphasizes training Hawaii residents in the field of tropical infectious disease research. The program will reach out to partner institutions in the Asia-Pacific Region to develop collaborative programs that will facilitate early warning surveillance and effective emergency response to epidemic infectious diseases, whether they are introduced to Hawaii by natural means, or intentionally.
