The Ninth East-West Philosophers’
Conference officially opens on
Sunday,
May 29, 2005, and
adjourns on
Friday,
June 10, 2005
.
However, participants should plan to arrive in Honolulu
on Saturday, May 28, and depart on Saturday, June 11.
Sunday,
May 29: Opening Ceremony
will be held at Keoni Auditorium,
Hawaii
Imin International
Conference
Center
at Jefferson Hall, East-West
Center.
Monday,
May 30: Opening Session
will be held at Keoni Auditorium.
Friday,
June 10: Closing Session
and a Farewell Banquet (by invitation) will be held at the Waialae Country Club
that evening.
There is no formal registration and no conference fees.
All conference sessions will be
held at Jefferson Hall and are open to the public.
Conference
packets will
be distributed to invited participants on Sunday, May 29, at Jefferson Hall.
May and June are peak travel periods in
Hawaii
so airline
reservations should be made early. Right
now is not too soon.
International
participants: Visa requirements vary in different countries and participants should
check with their travel agents.
If a visa is required to enter the United States, apply early because
some consulates/embassies have long waiting periods.
The
Honolulu
International
Airport
is about 20 minutes
from the University
of Hawaii
campus.
The East-West
Center, the Conference site,
is located next to the campus on East-West Road.
There are airport shuttles (about $6) to
Waikiki
but not to the campus.
Taxis from the airport to the East-West
Center
will cost about $20.
Arrangements have been made with the East-West
Center
to offer participants
of the conference accommodations at three on-campus residence halls.
To be eligible for these accommodations at the conference rates, you
must let the housing office know that you are participating in the "Ninth
East-West Philosophers' Conference" when
you make your reservations.
The housing office will have a list of official conference
participants.
Accommodations
are very limited so reservations should be made as soon as possible if you wish
to stay on campus. A
credit card is required. There is a
cancellation charge of one night's stay unless you inform the housing office of
the cancellation 72 hours prior to your scheduled arrival.

floors served by 2 elevators

4-story walk-up.
Dormitories
have shared bathroom and kitchen facilities.
Telephone,
bedding and linen are provided in all rooms but not cleaning service.
Double
rooms are furnished with 2 single beds.
Lincoln
Hall:
Studio
units (single or double occupancy) $49/night.
Studios
have private bathrooms, cable tv, and cleaning service Monday through Friday.
Bedding,
linen and towels are provided and most rooms have a double bed.
1-bedroom
units with kitchen (single or double occupancy) $65/night.
OFF-CAMPUS
ACCOMMODATIONS
Waikiki
offers many hotels from reasonable to high end for those who wish to
stay near the beaches. Internet
sites often have the best bargains but require immediate decisions.
Although Waikiki
is not far from the
campus (as the crow flies), the city bus may take 30 to 60 minutes (bus fare
$2.00). Taxis take about 15-20
minutes and charge about $10 one way.

Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided at Jefferson Hall, the
Conference
Center, for conference participants
only, Monday through Friday, May 30 – June 10.
For evening meals and weekends, there are cafeterias and other food
outlets throughout the
University
of Hawaii
campus and a variety
of ethnic and other restaurants at
University Square, a business/commercial
center, a 20 minute walk from the residence halls.
