The Certified Clinical Ethics Consultant

Given the ethical dilemmas generated by modern medicine, it is not surprising to find "clinical ethics consultants" working in American hospitals.  Despite the often momentous nature of their recommendations, there are no authoritative credentials (like the M.D., R.N., etc.) that can assure hospitals an applicant for a position has the knowledge and skills required for doing the work.

Islam Day

A full day of Islamic celebration on Thursday, September 24th!  The day features documentaries on Islam as an empire of faith and newly trained female religious leaders in Morocco, as well as a presentation on the unique collection at the Shangri La Museum of Islamic Art in Honolulu.  A panel of speakers from the departments of Philosophy, History and Religion will show and respond to excerpts of speeches by President Obama talking about Muslims and the Islamic world.

The opening session is at 10 am and the day's events conclude at 3:30 pm.  All sessions take place in Sakamaki C-308.  Light refreshments are provided.  A full schedule is below.

Noted novelist, short-story writer, and anthologist Witi Ihimaera, currently Citizen's Chair in the UH Manoa English Department and Distinguished Visiting Writer, is working with University of Hawai`i writers in writing the Pacific short story or novel.

Come, listen, and discuss as Ihimaera reads with writers Keala Francis, Gina Kanekoa, Alexei Melnick, Kenneth Quilantang and Ida Yoshinaga. What problems do Pacific writers face as they write the local - whether it be historic, contemporary, postmodern, postcolonial or science fiction/fantasy - into existence?
