The Philosophy Department presents a colloquium by Ken Kipnis, Professor of Philosophy, University of Hawai‘i at Manoa
The Certified Clinical Ethics Consultant
Given the ethical dilemmas generated by modern medicine, it is not surprising to find "clinical ethics consultants" working in American hospitals. Despite the often momentous nature of their recommendations, there are no authoritative credentials (like the M.D., R.N., etc.) that can assure hospitals an applicant for a position has the knowledge and skills required for doing the work.
Knowledge of ethical theory is not enough
Professor Kiipnis has been involved in the movement to professionalize clinical ethics consultation. He will discuss some of the issues that are raised by this effort to establish a place for ethics expertise in hospitals.
