-To connect members with professionals in the healthcare community
-To expose members to underserved areas, academic institutions, and organizations related to healthcare
-To help members meet other students with similar academic and career goals
Aloha and Welcome to the Pre-Medical Association at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa!
The 2013 – 2014 school year has begun, thus signaling another amazing year with PMA in the waiting.
PMA was established in 1974, and stands as the largest pre-health organization at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. Our organization believes in serving our community, providing our members with the most up-to-date information and resources, offering a variety of events for our members to participate in, developing professional leadership skills, fostering teamwork, making a difference in Hawai'i, and creating friendships that will last a lifetime. The 2013 – 2014 Executive Board has worked relentlessly to ensure that our members get the best possible experience while being part of PMA.
We have formed a strong partnership with the Medical Student Mentorship Program at the John A. Burns School of Medicine and the Pre-Health/Pre-Law Advising Center at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa. Our members will have opportunities to access these amazing resources by participating in workshops and events that each of these respective organizations put together. To give members the best PMA experience, we offer our members three types of events. We offer members the opportunity to give back to the community by participating in community service events such as Kuakini Hospital and Relay for Life. For a more hands-on experience regarding what life is like as a health professional, we have medical education events such as suture labs and casting labs. However, we are also a club who believes in having fun and creating an 'ohana. To promote a family atmosphere, we offer fun and exciting socials such as the Joint BBQ Social, UH sporting events, and the End-of-the-Semester Banquet. Whether you are looking for community service opportunities, a glimpse of what life is like as a health professional, or just want to meet a new friend, we have something that will satisfy everybody!
Although we all come from different academic disciplines with various career aspirations, we all strive to achieve a common goal: to serve humanity. The journey from undergraduate to graduate school to eventually becoming a successful health care professional is a long and difficult adventure. There will be times when you may question your ability and wonder if you are good enough to succeed. However, if you truly enjoy making a difference in people’s lives and embrace the challenges that come with striving to becoming a health care professional, then the journey can also be very rewarding, fulfilling, and worthwhile once the light at the end of the tunnel has been reached.
PMA strives to be an organization that helps students with common interests on their journey to becoming successful health care professionals. We want to help remind our members to keep their passion and dream alive, and to encourage and cheer them on along the way. Let’s all work together to make the PMA the best organization that it can be!
