Research Interests and Ongoing Projects

Leadership and Crisis Management: leadership scholarship and development; crisis auditing and management; and preparedness, prevention, response and recovery for organizational and disaster-related crises and emergencies.
Bioterrorism: leadership and medical practitioner competencies. prevention of bioterrorism, education and response, modes and methods of bioterrorism, context and ethical issues, information management and control.
Environmental Health: Management of ecosystem changes that impact negatively on public health – e.g. climate change effects on vector-borne disease. Other areas include risk assessment and communication, toxicology, ethics, sustainability, sanitation, air and water pollution, solid and hazardous waste, environmental disasters.
Medical Entomology: integrated vector management (IVM), vector control, pesticide management, disease transmission, epidemiology, surveillance, biology of vector-borne diseases.
Community Development: awareness building, vector and pest management programs, environmental modification, education, sustainability, traditional governance, reforestation.

With a background in arts and theatre management, Associate Professor Canyon was attracted by infectious diseases, arthropod vectors and complex transmission dynamics into the field of public health. A decade later, he acted on an emerging interest in crisis leadership and worked on bioterrorism competencies in health leaders. After spending time with Prof Ian Mitroff in San Francisco and several other distinguished crisis scholars in the USA, he conducted crisis leadership audits on over 130 health and other organisations from 2007. In 2010 he completed a study on 2000 effective and poor leaders in business, health and emergency management in Australia, India and the Philippines. Associate Professor Canyon has published over 120 journal articles, book chapters, books and conference papers.
