Jeffrey (Kapali) Lyon

Jeffrey (Kapali) Lyon has worked in biblical and early Christian literature, including Hebrew Bible, the Greek New Testament, and early Aramaic translations of the Gospels. In recent years he has been focusing on 19th century Hawaiian language texts, including a forthcoming critical edition of of Davida Malo’s Moʻolelo Hawaiʻi, research into the remarkable 1839 translation of the Bible into Hawaiian, and the profound societal and religious transformations which occurred in Hawaiʻi as a result of the native renunciation of the kapu (taboo) system in 1819 followed by the arrival of the American Protestant mission in 1820.
