Using Endnote

Connecting to Hawaii Voyager, the online library catalog for UH

1. Go to Tools > Online Search > New Search
2. Find the Hawaii catalog connection file and Choose.A search window will open, allowing you to search the Author, Title, Subject, and ISBN fields as a keyword search.

Note: The Connection file access to databases works only with free, open access databases such as library catalogs. Article indexes (e.g. PsycInfo, MLA, CAB Abstracts, etc.) that require subscriptions cannot be accessed through Endnote in this way. Go to the next section Importing References From Indexes for steps to importing references from online indexes.

2. Save your references as a text file onto your desktop.
3. In Endnote, go to File > Import.
4. In the popup dialogue box find the text file of your citations and select.
5. Under Import Options, find the filter that corresponds to the index and vendor, example: PsycInfo (CSA).
6. Click Import.
7. Go to References > Show All to view all of the references in your Endnote Library.

Using Endnote and MS Word to Create a Document with In-Text References and a Bibliography

EbscoHost databases and Thomson ISI databases offer a Direct Export Option (Electronic Resources Gateway).

2. When you wish to insert an in-text citation, select the reference in your Endnote Library, then in MS Word go to Tools > Endnote > Insert Citation.
3. The citation will be formatted in the output style selected in your Endnote Library. To change the style, in MS Word go to Tools > Endnote > Format Bibliography.
4. As you insert in-text citations, a full reference is generated at the end of your document in a bibliography.
