Finding Engineering Journals
The online catalog of the University of Hawaii Libraries. To find a journal title, go to Basic Search and perform a title search. If you are unsure about the title, use keywords from the title or search on the ISSN as a keyword, ex: 1084 AND 0699 retrieves a record for the journal Journal of Hydrologic Engineering.
Electronic Journals at UH Manoa
Use this database to find electronic journals and databases that are available through the library. Once the link to a journal or database is retrieved, you will login to connect to the UHM Library proxy server. Many of the licensed resources are only accessible outside of the library to UHM faculty, students, and staff.
E-Books
A collection of over 22,000 e-books, includes Schaum's guides to offer basic support in calculus and other mathematics, and many engineering handbooks. Create an Ebrary account so that you can save books to your Bookshelf.

Engineering Literature Indexes
ASCE Civil Engineering Database 1970 - present
Citations with abstracts for articles in all American Society for Civil Engineering journals, conference proceedings, books, standards, and other publications. Journal papers with abstracts go back to 1970; indexing of ASCE journals, without abstracts, goes back to 1958; records for books goes back to 1900. The papers indexed back to 1993 are available in full-text. Click on the Purchase This Article/Access Full-Text link, then scroll down to the pdf link below the abstract.
ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) Digital Library
A full-text database of ACM journals and conference proceedings that includes current and archival content.
A free, globally available index that focuses on computer science and engineering papers, hosted by the NEC Research Institute. Provides bibliographic citations, as well as citation counts to the papers indexed. The papers represented go back to the early 1990's generally with better coverage for recent papers and are from personal websites, conference papers, journal publications, and books.
Compendex via EI Village 1970 - present:
A comprehensive index of engineering literature, available to UH Manoa Library users that has citations with abstracts to international engineering journals, conference proceedings, technical reports, and trade publications.
Geobase via Ovid
1980 - present:
Citations for journal articles, books, monographs, conference proceedings, and reports, many with abstracts, in geography, geology, ecology, and engineering.
IEEE Xplore 1998-present
Full text of IEEE Society sponsored journals and proceedings. An excellent source for engineering papers. UH Manoa access includes IEEE publications back to 1998. Earlier issues of IEEE journal articles and proceedings are available in print in Hamilton Library (Proceedings of the IEEE is held at TK5700 .I6 on the 4th floor of Hamilton Library Addition.)
SciFinder Scholar 1907-present:
Web-based Chemical Abstracts that requires installation of special software on your computer. Must be a UH Manoa faculty, staff, or student to load client software onto lab or personal computers and access the remote server. To obtain a copy of the software, email the Science & Technology Reference Department. Database is the premier index of chemical research and patents. (Note: public access available in Hamilton Library 1st floor addition)
SPIE Digital Library 1990-present:
The SPIE Digital Library of the International Society for Optical Engineering is the most extensive resource available on optics and photonics, providing unprecedented access to more than 230,000 technical papers from SPIE Journals and Conference Proceedings. More than 17,000 new research papers are added annually.
A multidisciplinary index in which the most highly cited mathematical journals are indexed. Online coverage is available from 1980 to the present. Also known as Science Citation Index in print. The Hamilton Library holdings go back to 1964 in the print format and can be found at call number Z7401 .S365 in Science & Technology Reference, 1st Floor Hamilton Library Addition.

CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics
Find chemical and physical data of inorganic and organic compounds. This online database contains the data tables found in the 87th edition of theHandbook. The print copy of this edition is held in the Science & Technology Reference Desk.
Handbook of Mechanical Engineering Calculations (2nd Edition)
Online book accessed through ebrary, published by McGraw Hill, 2006, edited by Tyler G. Hicks.
McGraw-Hill's Engineering Companion
Online book accessed through ebrary, edited by Ejup N. Ganic, published by McGraw-Hill Professional Publishing, 2002.
Standard Handbook of Engineering Calculations
Located at TA 332 .S73 1995 in the Science & Technology Reference area, Hamilton Library Addition, this handbook, now in its third edition, provides equations and problem-solving strategies for many engineering projects. Also located in this area are other handbooks related to solving mathematical engineering problems.
Handbook of Mathematical Functions with Formulas, Graphs and Mathematical Tables, volume 55 of National Bureau of Standards Applied Mathematics Series by M. Abramowitz and I. Stegun.
One of the most highly cited sources of mathematical functions in applied mathematics research. The print copy is in SciTech Reference at call number QA55 .A2 1965.
A broad array of conversions for weight, distance, currency, engineering, fluids, light, etc.
Engineering Statistics Handbook
An online html handbook that provides information about using statistics in engineering projects, giving statistical calculation examples, graphing guidance, and a free software Dataplot. Created by the Statistical Engineering Division of the U.S. government agency, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
Finding Standards
ASTM Standards
The UH Manoa Library maintains a subscription to the ASTM Standards (once known as American Society for Testing and Materials). The most current volumes are in the Science & Technology Reference area at TA 401 .B646. Earlier editions are on the 4th floor at the same call number. If you have an ASTM Standard Number, e.g. D695-02a, go to the index, volume 00, and find the entry. The index entry will tell you which volume to open to find the full standard.
ANSI Standards
The UH Manoa Library has many ANSI (American National Standards Institute) Standards shelved on the 4th floor of Hamilton Library Addition at T 59 .A44. A complete listing of the ANSI standards held at the library is at the Science & Technology Reference desk, where staff can help you. The library holdings goes up to 1996. If you need standards from 1996 to the present, these can be requested through Interlibrary Services if you are a member of UH Manoa campus.
Finding Patents
U.S. Patent & Trademarks Office (USPTO)
The U.S. Patents from 1790 to the most current submissions are available on the from the USPTO website in full-text. See The 7-Step U.S. Patent Search Strategy for a structured approach to searching the USPTO.
Printing is one page at a time. To download the entire patent to pdf go to pat2pdf.com, a free service.
Google provides a google interface to explore the USPTO patent database.
This is a database that offers international coverage, though they note that it is not comprehensive. Information about 81 national patent offices is available from this site at Global Patent Data Coverage, January 2007.
